With over 40 years of ceramic experience, Carstens utilizes his specialized skills to create high-quality works that strive to enrich everyday life. His primary focus is to create sculptural and functional work using traditional and innovative techniques. Carstens' work is created by hand utilizing his custom stoneware clay body and fired to vitrification, making the ware durable and lasting. He runs Mississippi Mud Studios, which was established in 2006 originally as a community studio in Dubuque, and is now a more private concern located in Maquoketa, IA.
