Like a cherub in a 90’s Berlin rave, Daphne Sweet’s work is unmistakable. Likened to Picasso, Rococo and children’s drawings Sweet’s shy, “no thought” approach to making is both private and inviting. Proudly existing at a seashore and trench level of meaning, Sweet’s work features a familiar cast of characters and gestures distorted by color and repetition. Drive slow on a foggy highway with the oncoming traffic blurring past or follow a lightning bug through a hot summer night in this digital age and you’ll end up in the subterranean miasma of Sweet’s work.
